The Toyota Raize 1.0XS is a brand new compact Crossover launched at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. An answer to Toyota’s mini-SUV segment, the new sub-4 meter SUV was showcased to be a desirable car for its distinct and upscale structure, easy-to-drive capacity, and roomy interior.
The XS models will come with the additional Smart Assist Feature, providing several collision prevention features such as the Collision Avoidance Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and False Start Suppression function.
Weighing slightly below 1 tonne, the 3-cylinder engine has no issue powering this compact SUV around town. The turning radius is exceptional for this small SUV as well.
Visually, it sports a new styling and design language and not forgetting the distinctive Toyota face, matching its outstanding basic performance.
Special Features of the Raize 1.0XS
Smart Assist System
Distinctively integrated with the Smart Assist feature, the new Toyota Raize has two small cameras mounted behind its front windshield.
The Smart Assist system provides Collision Avoidance Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning, False Start Suppression, and a list of other proactive collision prevention features.
Upscaled Road Safety Features
Reducing discomfort for the driver, especially at night, is a priority for Toyota with its anti-glare inner mirror. The automatically-dimming mirror dims correspondingly to the amount of light that reaches them, allowing it to dim more when the headlights are closer to your vehicle.
When driving in wet seasons, the rear window defogger gives more road safety and significantly reduces the chances of accidents. When activated, the metal resistance produces enough heat to evaporate fog in your rear window, giving you more visibility.
The LCD multi-information display features an Optitron meter, matched with its advanced backlight in the instrument cluster.
Compared to the regular lighting, the Optitron meter produces both purpose and style with its anti-glare technology, producing colours that are easy on the eyes.
Generous Luggage Compartment
With its retractable rear seats, you gain more space for your cargo purposes. Extra under-floor storage underneath your rear cargo area is also provided, giving you more space for your valuables or technical equipment.
LCD Multi-Information Display
The low electrical power consumption of the LCD screen can be used in battery-powered electronic equipment more efficiently.
The LCD multi-information display now provides clearer and advanced information for your driving convenience while also playing its role as an energy-efficient feature.
Keyless Start/Stop Function
For added security and convenience, the keyless start/stop function allows your car to lock itself after getting out and reaching a distance automatically. This function essentially eliminates the possibility of forgetting to lock your vehicle while also giving you a stress-free start to your drive.
Interior of the Toyota Raize 1.0XS
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
One of the benefits of a CVT is its capacity to unfailingly change its gear ratio. It will always perform at its top efficiency no matter what the engine speed it is on. As a result, this transmission type also offers a better fuel economy, especially when driving in the city.
First-Class Field of View
Accompanying the advanced digital speedometer and LCD display in the interior dashboard is the well-designed cabin. The dashboard design comes with sleek horizontal lines on the trim, perfectly complementing the leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel.
Its edgy-shaped windshield also suits the nicely contoured seats with its red accents, completing your first-class field of view.
Improved Safety Feature
Every single Raize will also come equipped with six airbags, which is not very common on Japanese cars at the price range set for this model. Reducing injuries between the vehicle’s interior and the flailing occupant/s will be increased with this newly added safety feature.
6:4 Split Retractable Rear Seat
A space-saving seat solution is offered through the 6:4 split retractable rear seats. Pulling up on the release knob and folding the seat forward is an easy task in the Raize. In returning it to its original position, you need to lift it up and push it back into the place until the latch click is heard.
3-Spoke Steering Wheel
A multi-functional leather-trimmed 3-spoke steering wheel gives you a comfortable grip and was also designed to work with other controls.
With its 3-spoke design, you can essentially keep your hands and the proper ‘3-9’ position, giving you a more relaxed position while driving.
Practical Connectivity Features
With its 2 audio speakers, Bluetooth connectivity, USB & iPod video playback capabilities, you can easily find ways to enjoy your ride with the Toyota Raize. It also offers a USB terminal for charging, one in front and two in the rear area so that you can enjoy your long drives.
Exterior of the Toyota Raize 1.0XS
Unique Exterior Set-Up
The new styling of the Toyota Raize gives the car a sharper outlook, especially with its Katakana brush strokes-like design from the RAV4 integrated to its front end. It features the distinctive Toyota face with its well-proportioned and body-colored C-pillars, matching its dual-tone black roof option.
The overall exterior structure of the new model was based on the DNGA platform of the Daihatsu Rocky.
Style with Purpose
Practically designed to pick up other signals such as GPS, cellular data, and satellite radio signals, the shark-fin-shaped roof antenna also gives a good-looking way of sporting the uniqueness of the Toyota Raize, providing another set of convenience and upscale design.
The compact SUV comes with a large trapezoidal lower grille skirted by LED Daytime Running Lamps and fog lamps on either side, integrated with black cladding.
The main headlights are positioned above, which also acquires LED treatment, complete with calibrated turn lights.
Providing more energy efficiency and more intense lighting while driving, the new LED headlights showcase its evident reliability for your driving, whether at daytime or nighttime.
16-Inch Alloy Wheels
Made out of light materials, its 16-inch alloy wheels offer you a greater performance quality as you gain increased acceleration and faster stopping. This set of wheels can also get a dual-tone effect, expanding your personal preference.
Sturdy Rear Profile
The rear profile of the Toyota Raize also shows its distinctive form. The rear area and rear bumpers feature a more aggressive and sharper styling while also showcasing the integrated guards protecting the vehicle body from scratches.
Positioned as the younger sibling to the RAV4, the new Toyota Raize is also a badge-engineered version of the Daihatsu Rocky. Today, it will sport its personal badge from Toyota, fully capitalized and italicized on the tailgate’s far left side corner.

History of Toyota Raize 1.0XS
Before the Toyota Raize got its official nameplate, this car first got the nameplate called “Daihatsu Rocky.” It was the nameplate used by Daihatsu, another Japanese automobile manufacturer, for their own lineup of SUVs. This lineup started to showcase itself between 1989 and 2002 and was eventually replaced by the launched Terios.
In 2019, the Rocky nameplate retired to Japan and replaced Daihatsu Be-go with its second-generation A200 series Rocky. Revealed at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show in October 2019, the A200 series was marketed in Japan in November 2019. It was then rebadged and sold by Toyota as the new Toyota Raize, replacing the J200 series Rush.
In order to create more distinction, the front fascia of the Toyota Raize was relatively changed, thereby seeing a more aggressive and sophisticated look. The newly-revealed Toyota Raize is also considered the sibling of the very well-known Toyota RAV4 while also sporting its Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) architecture.
While the new Toyota Raize 1.0XS and its other variants incorporate the brand’s next-generation DNGA, its drivetrain is also newly developed with the target of achieving excellent driving performance, luxury, and safety. On the outside, the new Raize is characterized by its angular bumper corners and trapezoidal lower grille to give it a powerful stance while slim LED headlights and sequential tail lights hint at the advanced technologies.
With the highly distinctive design of its front end and its generous space both in its front and rear seat area, this new model from Toyota boasts a luxurious and quality design. The Raize is offered in X, XS (or X”S”), G, and Z trim levels. A four-wheel-drive option is also provided for each trim level.
Taking over Corolla’s spot as the No. 1-selling new car, the Toyota Raize is mainly sold in the Japanese market, also followed by the US market and some Asian regions.
