History of Toyota Kluger 2.5 GX Hybrid

The Toyota Kluger is a mid-size crossover SUV from Toyota that uses the same platform as the Camry. It debuted at the New York International Auto Show in April 2000 and was one of the first vehicle-based midsize SUVs or crossovers. 

In Japan, the Toyota Kluger was a more extensive alternative to the RAV4 and available only through the Toyota NETZ dealer network. Its name was derived from the German word “Klug” which means clever or smart. 

In its first generation, it shared a platform with its XU30-series cousin – the Toyota Harrier – which was available as a five- and seven-seater and was a sales success for Toyota in several markets.

Toyota introduced its second-generation at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show, with sales beginning in July in the United States, and the hybrid variant went on sale in late September. The second generation was not yet available in Japan, and a five-seat variant for the United States and Canada was discontinued in favour of the Venza.

The third-generation Kluger was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show in March 2013 and has been refined to look more like other midsize crossover SUVs. It also includes an 8-seat variant with a sliding second-row entry and soft-touch materials on the instrument panel. 

In 2019, the fourth generation was revealed at the New York International Auto Show, based on a GA-K platform. A hybrid model was available in February 2020, and the Japanese brand added trim levels such as GX and XSE for the 2021 model year. 

Since its introduction, the Toyota Kluger has remained popular in the United States, with over 200,000 units sold, followed by China and Australia.
