History of Toyota Granace 2.8D Premium (6 Seater)
The Toyota HiAce, pronounced “High Ace,” is a light commercial van manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota. The HiAce was first introduced in October 1967 and has since been available in various body configurations, including a minivan/MPV, minibus, panel van, crew van, pickup truck, taxi, and ambulance. In Japan, the HiAce is only available at Toyopet Store locations.
Toyota Auto Body, a Toyota subcontracting company, led the development of the HiAce in the late 1960s as a small van with a one-box design, similar to European ones at the time but, according to former Toyota senior employee Akira Kawahara, unheard of in the Japanese industry.
The HiAce was introduced in 1967 as a cab over the pick-up, delivery van, and stretched commuter vehicle. In camper van configuration, it was also known as the HiAce Commercial. It was released two years after the Nissan Homy, which Nissan acquired when they took over the operations of the Prince Motor Company.
The HiAce was designed primarily as a commuter vehicle, with seating for up to eight people. With this goal in mind, the HiAce exterior dimensions and engine displacement were designed according to Japanese government regulations to encourage sales and accommodate the greatest number of passengers by utilizing a cabover body style, with the engine installed underneath and between the front passengers. With this goal in mind, the HiAce exterior dimensions and engine displacement were designed to comply with Japanese government regulations in order to promote sales and accommodate the most passengers by utilizing a cabover body style, with the engine installed underneath and between the front passengers.
The 1977 HiAce had a longer, more streamlined cab with single headlights. As the dimensions of the second generation grew, it was joined by a smaller, junior-level cabover van called the Toyota LiteAce to maintain dimensions closer to the first generation.
In 1982, a new HiAce van was introduced, followed by the HiAce pickup truck in August 1985. The truck’s cab design was similar to that of the larger ToyoAce light truck, though the frontal styling was different. The truck was a different model than the van.
The fourth-generation model debuted in August 1989 and was available in standard and long-wheelbase variants and a Grand Cabin, standard and long-wheelbase vans, and long and super long wheelbase high roof vans. The Commuter, a 15-seat minibus, shares a body design with the latter. In August 1993, the fourth-generation HiAce received a facelift.
The fifth-generation HiAce was introduced in late 2004 as a wide long-wheelbase wagon, a wide super-long-wheelbase high-roof “Grand Cabin,” a long-wheelbase van, a long-wheelbase high-roof van, and a wide super-long-wheelbase high-roof van. On June 13, 2005, the fifth-generation HiAce was introduced in the Philippines, with D-4D variants; the 15-seater Commuter and the 13-seater GL Grandia, both with manual transmission.
On February 18, 2019, the sixth generation HiAce made its global debut in the Philippines. It departs from the design language of its predecessors by employing a front hood/bonnet arrangement rather than a cab-over design. Takuo Ishikawa, Toyota’s chief engineer, oversaw its development.
Granvia, a more luxurious passenger version of the HiAce, was released on May 21, 2019, and is available in Taiwan and Australia (replacing the Tarago). The Granvia was also released as the Majesty in Thailand on August 16, 2019, replacing the Ventury,[65], followed by the HiAce Super Grandia in the Philippines on August 19, 2019. It is also known as the GranAce in Japan, where it was announced on October 8, 2019, and debuted at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show from October to November 2019. On December 16, 2019, it went on sale.
The HiAce Powervan served as the foundation for the Grand Hiace. The largest market of Toyota HiAce is in Japan, and the Philippines is the largest Hiace market outside Japan.20
