History of Suzuki Jimny Sierra Little G 1.5 JC

The Suzuki Jimny Sierra is one of the few current four-wheel-drive vehicles with a direct line of descent. Today’s Jimny Sierra is a direct descendant of the original Jeep “manufactured” by the US Army during WWII, just as today’s Land Rover Defender is a descendant of the first 1948 Land Rover.

Suzuki was founded in 1909, but at the time, it did not produce vehicles, 4x4s, or motorbikes. Michio Suzuki started the ‘Suzuki Loom Works’ in 1909 to produce textile-spinning looms for the silk industry in Japan.

When Suzuki bought the insolvent Japanese carmaker Hope Motor Company in 1968, it launched the HopeStar ON360, a small off-road vehicle. However, due to the small Hope company’s inability to attain series production, roughly 45 were produced. Thus, in 1970, the LJ10 (Light Jeep 10) was introduced as Suzuki’s first four-wheel-drive vehicle. The LJ10’s engine was a 359cc air-cooled two-stroke in-line two-cylinder.

Since April 1970, Suzuki has been manufacturing and selling the Suzuki Jimny, a four-wheel-drive off-road small SUV. It’s on its fourth generation right now. However, the Jimny Sierra and versions that exceed the Kei Class constraints are still available for the Japanese and foreign markets. Suzuki sold 2.85 million Jimnys in 194 countries between September 2017 and September 2018.

The Suzuki Jimny four-wheel drive is sold out for up to a year, despite the plant stepping up production to match a new increase in demand. Over 2500 Suzuki Jimny four-wheel drives have been sold in Australia since 2019, with over 1000 delivered this year alone.
