History of Smart ForFour EQ Premium

The Smart ForFour is a city car that has been presented and produced by Smart for over three generations. It includes a 5-door variant with a front engine for the first generation and a rear engine/electric motor for the second and third generations.

From 2004-2006, the first generation ForFour was marketed only in Europe and Australia as a 4-door, 5-seat hatchback using the same platform as the Mitsubishi Colt. The first generation ForFour was the result of a collaboration between DaimlerCrysler and Mitsubishi to produce a hatchback supermini for the European market.

Mercedes-Benz trusted the Japanese carmaker, which had little or no experience in this segment, to develop a suitable platform for the segment. Unlike its brother ForTwo, however, the ForFour could carry up to five passengers and was easy to park. 

After an eight-year hiatus, the second-generation Forfour debuted in July 2014, sharing the platform with the third-generation Renault Twingo and the mechanicals with the third-generation Smart Fortwo. It was offered as a simple mobility solution for four adults in a small package.

The second-generation ForFour was produced in Slovenia at a Renault plant and developed jointly with the French carmaker. It was a vehicle built on a specially developed safety cell called Tridion with a rear engine and transmission in a four-door version of the ForTwo.

Since 2018, a battery/electric version was marketed as EQ ForFour and produced exclusively under Daimler/Mercedes-Benz. The EQ version of the Smart ForFour was initially offered as an option, but after Geely bought 50 percent of Smart GmbH from Daimler, it became the only remaining version. 

It is offered exclusively with zero-emission electric powertrains and developed in Germany. For the global market, however, it was mainly manufactured in China. 

Since its introduction, sales of the Smart ForFour have doubled in the European market, with the United Kingdom as one of the growing markets, followed by Italy and Germany.
