A muscular torque machine with seating for seven adults, luxurious and comfy cabin, and go-anywhere ability. This just about sums up the new Mercedes-Benz GLS400D AMG Premium – the big daddy of all Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
The GLS-Class is equivalent to the S-Class saloon, but in SUV guise. The new model is 77 mm longer and 22 mm wider than its predecessor while wheelbase has grown by 60 mm. As a result, the second and third rows have enough space to accommodate passengers who are up to 2.0 m and 1.94 m respectively. Luggage capacity is equally prodigious – with all seats up, you can stow 355 litres. If all seats are folded, an astounding 2400 litres of space is available (loaded to the roof).
Equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, AIRMATIC air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive dampers, Four-wheel Electronic Traction System (4ETS) and 22-inch AMG alloy wheels, the GLS400D AMG Premium is equally capable on highways, B-roads and off-road tracks.
With a 2.9-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine delivering 330 hp and more importantly, 700 Nm of tarmac-twisting torque, the GLS400D AMG Premium is a beast. Despite weighing close to 2.5 tonnes, it’s still able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. If you dare to keep pedal to the metal, top speed is 250 km/h.
Making it easier for entry and egress and luggage to be ferried are a host of features including EASY-PACK powered tailgate and load compartment cover, electrically folding and raising third-row seats with EASY-ENTRY system, closing aid for doors and tailgate, and KEYLESS-GO Comfort package.
Other equipment highlights are gesture control in the front, head-up display, MBUX, wireless charging, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, THERMOTRONIC luxury automatic climate control and AIR BALANCE air fragrancing, ionisation and filtration.
