History of Mercedes-Benz GLA200 Sport Executive (FM2021)
The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, a compact SUV developed to combine a hatch’s practicality with the option of four-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz designed and marketed the GLA-Class for over two generations (2013-2019 and 2019-present).
Mercedes-Benz showcased the GLA-lass for the first time at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show. A preliminary concept debuted in April 2013 at the Shanghai Auto Show. GLA-Class started production at the Mercedes-Benz Rastatt plant in Germany in December 2013.
The GLA nameplate corresponds to the Mercedes SUV terminology, where GL stands for Geländewagen (German for off-road vehicle), and A designates its overall position in the Mercedes range, the smallest in this class or A-Class.
The new GLA has a brand new character based on the MFA2 (Modular Front-wheel-drive Architecture) platform shared with seven other compact Mercedes-Benz models. The new model offers increased headroom and even more legroom by more than 10 centimeters than its predecessor, although it is shorter than it replaces.
With cooperative driver support, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA takes a further step in safety, courtesy of its driving assistance systems. For example, the Driving Assistance Package’s enhanced functions include the turning maneuver function, the emergency corridor function, the exit warning function that alerts the driver to approaching cyclists or vehicles, and a warning when pedestrians are detected near zebra crossings.
For the new edition of the compact model series, the new GLA places its trust in the four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, wholly modernized. They are characterized by significantly increased specific outputs and by improved efficiency and emissions compared to the previous generation.
The new GLA brings together the best from the two segments of the highest volume, compact cars and SUVs. SUVs are a central structural pillar in the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio and now represent Mercedes-highest-volume Benz’s segment. Over six and a half million customers worldwide have opted for a Mercedes-Benz SUV to date.
