History of Mercedes-AMG SL55 4MATIC+ Premium Plus

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a grand touring sports car that has been manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. In 2022 it is now marketed as the Mercedes-AMG SL-Class, the designation being derived from the German word Sport-Leicht or Sport Light. 

Originally, the first 300 SL was a racing sports car built in 1952, with no intention of developing a street version. However, in 1954, Max Hoffman, an American importer, proposed the street version of the 300 SL 

This street version of the 300 SL was produced for wealthy high-performance car enthusiasts in the United States, where the personal luxury car market was booming after World War II.

After almost seven decades on the racetrack, a new generation of SL has been reborn and confirmed to be an AMG-only model. This seventh generation of the SL-Class was unveiled in October 2021 with three models and punchy powertrains.

A 2.0-litre I4 mild hybrid engine is found in the entry-level SL43, while a 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo gasoline engine is found in the SL55 and SL63. These models are only available with all-wheel drive, which is a first for the SL-Class. 

In addition, these new models are equipped with a soft top, which replaces the retractable hard top of previous generations. This new generation also features a 2+2 seating configuration as standard, with a seat height of up to 1.5 metres in the rear – a first for the SL-Class range.
