History of Mazda MX-30 EV Sport Lux

The Mazda MX-30 is a compact crossover SUV with electric and hybrid powertrains manufactured by Mazda. It is based on the CX-30 and was revealed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. Series production of the first electric car began in May 2020 at the Ujina No. 1 plant in Hiroshima, Japan. 

Four years ago, the development team met with many customers around the world during the preparation phase of the MX-30’s development. They found that an unexpectedly large number of the customers they met did not have a TV in their living rooms, while others emphasised that the cabin of their car gave them a special space and time to be themselves again.

As a result, the development team decided to create a car that offered time and space to fulfil their customers’ wishes. The exterior of the MX-30 was derived from the “Human Modern” concept, highlighted by the flat doors and refined lines that run from the front to the mirrors – a perfect representation of the ideal “less is more”.

The Mazda MX-30 is also considered an eco-EV, as it features a variety of sustainable materials sourced from nature. For example, the door panels are made from recycled plastic bottles and some parts of the centre console are made from heritage cork, which is derived from the bark of trees that have not been felled. 

As for the powertrain, the MX-30 makes do with an electric motor that produces 143 hp and transmits all its power to the front wheels only. Since it is primarily intended as a city car, the model uses a small 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery that gives it a total range of up to 130 miles.

It has received a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP and is the first car to achieve the maximum rating under the new criteria. The Mazda MX-30 was also included in the 10 Best List of the 2020-2021 Car of the Year Japan Awards and won the 2020 Red Dot Design Award in the electric vehicle category.

The Mazda MX-30 officially went on sale in 2020 in Japan, its home market. For the European market, the MX-30 was also launched as an all-electric car in autumn 2020 and in the United Kingdom in early 2021. An EV model was also offered in California in autumn 2021, with a plug-in hybrid variant following later.
