Land Rover Defender 90 P400 2021 Review

History of Land Rover Defender 90 Hard Top

The Land Rover Series was first manufactured in 1948 and its concept arose when the Rover Company was experiencing difficulties following World War II. The first Land Rover developed was inspired by the Willys Jeep. It was a four-wheel-drive truck meant to work on agricultural settings with its steel frame and aluminium body. With that, the Land Rover Series I was born, which was available in various wheelbase, door count, and body style configurations.

It has undergone numerous modifications over more than a decade before becoming what it is today. The Series II, which debuted in 1958, had a much more defined shoulder line running the length of the vehicle and pioneered options like door cards and side mirrors. In 1971, the Series III had its headlights switched from the grille out to the fenders. In addition, in 1979, a V8-powered model was introduced with a modified grille that established the SUV’s iconic front end shape.

In 1983, that design was carried over to the Land Rover One-Ten and Land Rover Ninety (now badged 110 and 90). This also marked the first time usage of coil-spring suspension among other improvements and modernization of the SUV, which later became a standard. To distinguish it from the Discover range, Land Rover gave the Defender name to the range in 1990.

The Defender, now in its fifth generation, was completely redesigned for the 2020 model year and is no longer body-on-frame like its predecessors but is built on a brand new architecture that is common among modern Land Rovers. Dubbed L663, the new Defender is much stiffer because of its lightweight aluminium monocoque construction of the chassis. Capable of riding through the urban jungle, and shifting sands in extreme terrains.

This latest Defender is available in badge 90 and 100 trim levels, alongside with S, SE, HSE, and X models. It will be available in a 3-door SUV for Defender 90 and a 5-door option on the Defender 110. The new Defender was engineered to bolster its off-road performance and best known for featuring the most rigid materials for optimum durability. It will be available in Europe, China, and the US continues to be Land Rover’s largest single market.
