History of Honda Fit 1.5A Hybrid e:HEV
The Honda Fit is a five-door B-segment subcompact car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001. With sales reaching almost 5-million by mid-2013, it was sold worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries. It was also marketed as Honda Jazz in the European markets in the mid-2020. The Honda Fit is remarkable for its one-box or monospace design with a forward located fuel tank and Honda’s so-called “Magic Seats” that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes. Its hybrid petroleum-electric versions were released by Honda in October 2010 in Japan and the following year in Europe.
Now on its fourth generation, the Honda Fit was unveiled simultaneously on October 23, 2019, in Japan at the 46th Tokyo Motor Show and Amsterdam, Netherlands, at the ‘Electric Vision’ event. The fourth-generation Honda Fit has been developed with electrification in mind. It is seen as the model being marketed as a hybrid-only model in Europe, and the hybrid variant being positioned as a volume maker in Japan. The hybrid powertrain is sold as the e:HEV, which utilises Honda’s new dual-motor i-MMD hybrid system., replacing the previous i-DCD setup.
The new Honda Fit retains its large windshield that offers optimal forward visibility and a redesigned front pillar with a cross-sectional structure different from the previous generation. With this redesigned front pillar, Honda stated that it improves the body’s impact absorption in a collision. The Honda Fit combines a flat dashboard and a visor-less instrument display that provides the driver with a better view of their surroundings.
With a new hybrid powertrain option marketed as the e:HEV, the new Honda Fit uses Honda’s dual-motor i-MMD hybrid system. The system combines a 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder petrol engine that on its own makes 97 hp from 5,600-6400 rpm and 127 Nm from 4,500-5,000 rpm. It has two electric motors, with one of them acting as a generator to recharge the lithium-ion battery, while the other is an electric propulsion motor capable of spinning 13,300 rpm to handle low-speed acceleration. The engine sends power to the front wheels that provide a smoother transfer of torque during acceleration through a single fixed-gear ratio and a lock-up clutch.
The Honda Fit was launched in Japan on February 13, 2020, and went on sale on the following day with trim levels including Basic, Home, Ness, Crosstar, and Luxe. It accounted for 72 percent of sales in March 2020 with the e:HEV hybrid system. The Honda Fit went on sale in Europe in mid-2020 as a hybrid-only Jazz model. On June 10, 2020, the Chinese-market Fit was produced and sold by Guangqi Honda with two submodels as Sport and Crosstar.
