History of BMW M5 Saloon Competition (FL2021)
The BMW M5 is a high-performance BMW 5 Series model sold under the BMW M sub-brand. In the sports sedan category, it is considered an iconic car. The majority of M5s were built in the sedan (saloon) body style, but from 1992 to 1995 and 2006 to 2010, the M5 was also available in some countries as a wagon (estate).
In 1985, the first M5 model was hand-built on an E28 535i chassis with a modified M1 engine, making it the fastest production sedan at the time. Since 1985, M5 models have been produced for every generation of the BMW 5 Series.
From October 1984 to June 1988, BMW produced the first M5, which was based on the E28 5 Series. In February 1985, it made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show. It was based on the 535i chassis with several mechanical modifications, the most notable of which was the M88/3 engine, which was an improved version of the M1 sports car’s engine. The E28 M5 was the world’s fastest production sedan when it debuted.
From September 1988 to August 1995, the E34 generation of the M5 was produced. It was first manufactured in a sedan body style, with an LHD Touring (wagon/estate) variant following in 1992. It was powered by the S38 straight-6 engine, which was an evolution of the previous generation’s straight-6.
The E39 version of the M5 was introduced in 1998 at the Geneva Motor Show, and it was the first M5 to use a V8 engine, resulting in a power increase to 294 kW. (400 PS). It’s also the first M5 with aluminum front suspension components and a multi-link rear suspension system. In October of 1998, production began.
In 2004 the E60 M5 debuted, with a V10 engine and a 7-speed paddle-shift transmission that linked it to the BMW Sauber Formula One program, Featuring a V10 gasoline engine, the E60 M5 was the first production sedan in the world. The E61 Touring (wagon) body style was only available in Europe for this generation of the M5. The E63/E64 M6 coupé and convertible share mechanical components with the M5 and are based on a shortened version of the M5 chassis.
Went on sale in November 2011, the F10 M5 was first seen at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is the first turbocharged M5 model, and a twin-turbocharged V8 engine powers it. The 7-speed Getrag (now Magna) 7DCI600 dual-clutch transmission is standard in most markets, marking the first time an M5 has used a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The F90 M5 uses an all-wheel-drive (“xDrive”) powertrain and is based on the G30 5 Series, being the first time an M5 has not been rear-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive system, on the other hand, favours the rear wheels. If the electronic stability control (ESC) is disabled, it can also be set only to send power to the rear wheels. The automatic transmission is a ZF GA8HP75Z with eight speeds.
Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and South Africa were the official markets for the E28 M5. USA was the biggest single market for BMW M in 2019, including the iconic car, the BMW M5.
