History of BMW M4 Competition G82
The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of BMW’s 4 Series coupes and convertibles produced by BMW M. The M4 replaced the BMW M3 coupé and convertible models as part of the renumbering that separated the 3 Series coupé and convertible models from the 4 Series. An upgraded engine, suspension, and brakes are among the features over the regular BMW 4-Series, as are weight-saving measures such as increased use of carbon fibre, such as on the roof.
On its first generation, BMW’s technical specifications for the M4 were published on September 25, 2013. The S55B30 engine was designed and engineered by BMW M GmbH. Two mono-scroll turbochargers with a peak boost pressure of 18.1 psi are used in the engine. The power is rated at 317 kW (431 PS; 425 hp), but it is accomplished over a wide range of 5,500–7,300 rpm rather than at a fixed engine speed. Throughout the 1,850–5,500 RPM range, the engine produces 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. There are two transmission options: a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed M-DCT transmission.
BMW launched the M4 Competition in February 2016. The M4 Competition is equipped with a 331 kW (450 PS; 444 hp) engine and a revised suspension for improved handling. The included Adaptive M Suspension is complemented by new springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars. To suit the improved hardware, BMW also returned the electronic differential and Dynamic Stability Control. The interior is mostly unchanged, except for new lightweight sport seats and M-striped woven seat belts included in the Competition Package. M Sport exhaust with black chrome tailpipes and high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim are retained on the exterior. The kidney grille, side gills, and model badge on the trunk are all finished in gloss black.
The BMW M4’s second generation, codenamed G82, is based on the standard 4 Series (G22 generation), which is itself based on the BMW Concept 4. It’s a high-performance variant of the G22 4 Series standard. Along with the G80 BMW M3, prototypes of the BMW M4 have been seen testing on the Nurburgring. The first units were assembled in November 2020, with deliveries beginning in early 2021 around the world.
The 2021 M4 receives a 48-horsepower boost over the previous model and the engorged twin-kidney grille from the 4 Series, rather than the more palatable nose from the 3 Series.
In 2020, China was the most prominent car market, closely followed by the United States. Although BMW sells more cars in China than in the United States, the United States remains the market leader in BMW M models. In addition, the M division had a particularly successful year in 2020, with the North American country playing a significant role.
