History of Bentley Flying Spur First Edition W12
The Bentley Flying Spur’s illustrious history dates back to 1952, when J.P. Blatchley, chief designer, and Ivan Evernden, engineer, worked on an unofficial project to return Bentley to the pinnacle of Grand Touring. Their concept was based on the 180 bhp 4.9-litre straight-six engine of the brand that was to be replaced with a 6320cc V8 in 1959.
The name Flying Spur was taken from the design director of Mulliner, Arthur Talbot Johnstone, and more directly from his family’s heraldic coat of arms, the Scottish Borders Clan Johnstone. On the front grille, the first example featured the Clan Johnstone spur mascot.
The introduction of the S2 Continental Flying Spur, the fastest four-door car in the world, also marked the arrival of Bentley’s bigger, all-aluminium V8 engine in 1959. Electrically operated ride control, electric rear window demister, and press button window lifts were featured with significantly improved performance.
Between 1959 and 1962, a total of 1,900 S2 Fly Spurs were hand-built. This marked a new age of high-performance, luxury motoring and converted the British-built car into the ultimate Grand Tourer. As a four-door model of the Continental GT coupe, Bentley resurrected the Continental Flying Spur name in 2005. With a W12 engine and all-wheel drive, the latest model was available; it merged luxury and performance in ways never before seen.
A second-generation model was unveiled in 2013, called simply the Flying Spur. During the subsequent six years, a program of continuous growth and refinement, including a V8 powertrain, transformed the vehicle.
