Drive the iconic high-performance BMW M5

The latest BMW M5 also happens to be the sixth generation of this iconic high-performance saloon. Know more about this drive!

Interestingly, the new M5 was presented on 21 August 2017 during the 2017 Gamescom, to promote the upcoming Need for Speed Payback video game. This was then followed by a public reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September 2017.

Codenamed F90 M5, it’s based on the BMW 5 Series (G30). In contrast to the previous generations, the it’s available for the first time with all-wheel drive. However, BMW relied on a rear-biased design which was created exclusively for driving dynamics with a true rear wheel drive mode included in the all-wheel drive system.

The prodigious engine is an evolution of the S63 from the previous generation. With 441 kW (600 PS) on tap, the F90 M5 has the same power as the limited edition “Competition Package” and “30 Jahre M5” variants of the previous generation while torque has been raised to 750 Nm – 70 Nm more than the previous M5.

The car is equipped with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as opposed to its predecessor’s 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This made it the first M5 to have an automatic transmission only.

As expected, the new M5’s acceleration is explosive. Zero to 100 km/h takes a mere 3.4 seconds and if the pedal is kept floored, 200 km/h flashes by in 11.1 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h while the delimited top speed is 305 km/h.

Despite the heavier four-wheel drive system, BMW M was able to reduce the weight of the new M5 by about 40 kg over the previous model.
